“Blue Moon” on Hallowe’en?

– Is this a true Blue Moon?

..

pumpkin lantern 1In the Celtic Calendar, Sat 31 Oct is the festival of Samhain or Hallowe’en, the night before All Saints’ Day (ie All Hallows’ Eve), when the spirits of the dead are said to be around and the veils between the worlds are at their thinnest.  It’s one of the old “quarter days”, falling half-way between the Autumn Equinox and Midwinter Solstice in the Northern hemisphere, and marks the beginning of Winter.  Hallowe’en is traditionally celebrated by bonfires, pumpkin lanterns and wearing costumes to disguise oneself from the spirits flying around.  I remember going to Hallowe’en parties as a youngster carrying garlic in my pockets to ward off the nasty spirits!

Maypole

In the Southern hemisphere, the seasons are reversed, so this is the Celtic festival of Beltane, celebrated with flowers in full bloom marking the beginning of Summer.  Beltane is traditionally celebrated by dancing round the maypole, well-dressing (decorating village wells with flowers), Morris dancers and other forms of fertility celebrations, including crowning a maiden Queen of the May.

You’ll see a lot in the media about a “Blue Moon on Hallowe’en” … so OK, let’s look at this.  We have a Full Moon in Taurus on the evening of Hallowe’en/Beltane – though technically here in Queensland, it‘s not exact till the wee hours of the following day, just after midnight on Sun 1 Nov 2020.

**Is this Full Moon a true BLUE MOON?**

This phrase “Blue Moon” gets bandied about in the media whenever there are two Full Moons in a calendar month, claiming that the second one is a Blue Moon. That’s the popular definition, and it’s almost correct, but not quite! The correct astrological definition of a Blue Moon is when two Full Moons fall in the same zodiac sign, a much rarer instance.  For this to happen, the first Full Moon has to fall at zero or one degree and the second one at 28 or 29 degrees of the same sign, which is not happening here.   The last true Blue Moon was last year, the second Full Moon in Libra on Fri 19 April 2019.  This fell at 29 degrees of Libra, after the first Full Moon in Libra had been the previous month 21 March 2019 at zero degrees of Libra (yes right on the Equinox!).  So they weren’t in the same calendar month, but they were in the same zodiac sign.

It’s a very potent Full Moon, with an exact contact to Uranus which is likely to bring some surprises – if not some upsets – to the scene.  Not a great time to be having the Queensland elections!  Even the US elections are pretty close to this date, and will be beset by Mercury stationing to go direct.  Remember George W Bush’s first election, that went to recount after recount and eventually had to go to the Supreme Court for a final decision?  That election was on a Mercury stationary day!  For more astro lowdown on the US election, see my blog on Mercury retro.

The Full Moon in Taurus brings into focus your ability to be sensuous and grounded and is an excellent time to indulge the senses and pamper the body.  This Full Moon invites us to find a balance between the physical sensuality of Taurus and the emotional depth of Scorpio. The Full Moon falls at 8 degrees Taurus, so wherever this point falls in your chart, this is the area of your life that will be under the spotlight now, bringing matters to a head or to resolution, probably with some surprises thrown in too!
