Power struggles at New Moon in Scorpio 2024

The Scorpio New Moon falls on Fri 1 Nov 2024 at 9 Scorpio.  This New Moon brings the opportunity to begin a new cycle in self-empowerment.

Scorpio is Water sign, sensitive and feeling things at a very deep level. The sign is ruled by the planet Pluto which gives them their characteristic intensity, and they are finely attuned to power issues, with a kind of X-ray vision that tells them who’s to be trusted (and who’s not!).  They will carry secrets to the grave, and so have a natural talent for confidentiality. They are very loyal and dependable.   When manifesting negatively though, they can be ruthless and power-hungry.  You really don’t ever want to cross a Scorpio – like the scorpion, they are famous for that sting in their tail!

Remember the sign of Scorpio is associated with rebirth, or more accurately with all stages in the three-fold journey of transformation: death, the passage through the underworld and then the rebirth, rising like the phoenix from the ashes of the old self.  Scorpio represents the capacity for intense transformation and is the ultimate survivor.

If your birthday is close to this New Moon (within a day either side), this marks the beginning of a new cycle in your life in terms of your identity and your sense of purpose.

If you have a planet or chart point at 9 degrees Scorpio, this marks the beginning of a new cycle for you in whatever that planet symbolises (eg relationships for Venus).

Mars and Pluto, the co-rulers of Scorpio, come to an exact opposition on 3 Nov, 2 days after this New Moon, but they are still within exactitude at this lunation and their combined energies form part of the signature of this New Moon.  Mars in Cancer doesn’t confront, rather it fights indirectly.

Mars opposite Pluto conjures up images of fighting against the powers-that-be, especially with Pluto in the very last degree of Capricorn, which as I’ve said before, is the death throes of the old establishment order – wherever that’s found, from the Middle East to the multinational corridors of power and the presidential election in the US.

Other planetary energies are brought into play here. Mars and Pluto are in a larger pattern with Uranus, Neptune and Mercury, which are all linked in an easy flow of energy, suggesting that even if things are confrontational (Mars-Pluto) there are perhaps unusual, left-field Uranian ways to negotiate to bring about a resolution.  Pluto doesn’t move into Aquarius for good till 20 Nov, so I find it very interesting, if not a little scary, that the US election is happening with Pluto in this final degree of Capricorn and all the death throes of neoliberalism that this represents.  The old order is fighting for its life!

(There is light on the horizon though, in the form of the Saturn-Neptune conjunction which is approaching in 2025-26 and likely to bring a much more egalitarian system.)
