Hallowe’en or Beltane?

Hallowe’en or Beltane?

.

Celtic eight-fold yearThe cross-quarter days, the half-way points between the solstices and the equinoxes, are significant in the Celtic calendar. Traditionally they marked the beginning of the seasons, and were celebrated in a big way.

Because the seasons are reversed across North and South hemispheres, the festival you’ll be celebrating will depend on which hemisphere you live in.

.

pumpkin lantern 1Tues 31 Oct is a cross-quarter day.  In the northern hemisphere it’s the festival of Samhain or Hallowe’en, the night before All Saints’ Day (ie All Hallows’ Eve), when the spirits of the dead are said to come round and the veils between the worlds are at their thinnest.  This day falls half-way between the Autumn Equinox and Midwinter Solstice in the Northern hemisphere and so marks the beginning of Winter.  Hallowe’en was traditionally celebrated by bonfires, turnip or pumpkin lanterns, and wearing costumes to disguise oneself from the spirits around.  It marked the end of the harvest period as people went into the darkness of Winter.

.

MaypoleIn the Southern hemisphere, where the seasons are reversed, this is the Celtic festival of Beltane, a fertility festival celebrated with flowers in full bloom, which marks the beginning of Summer.  Beltane was traditionally celebrated by dancing round the maypole, well-dressing, Morris dancers and other forms of fertility celebrations, including crowning a young woman the Queen of the May.

Lunar eclipse Full Moon in Taurus 2023

Lunar eclipse Full Moon in Taurus 2023

partial lunar eclipseLunar Eclipse Full Moon in Taurus   Sun 29 Oct 2023 at 6.24am AEST at 5 Taurus (eclipse exact at 6.14am)

The Full Moon in Taurus on Sun 29 Oct is a partial lunar eclipse, amping up the energy of this Full Moon.  Full Moons tend to bring situations to a head and a lunar eclipse really adds to the intensity of whatever’s happening.  Be prepared for issues (whether at the personal or collective level) to reach some kind of crisis point where resolution becomes imperative.

At the collective level, the eclipsed Full Moon in Taurus asks that we bring our attention to Mother Earth.  It’s the last eclipse in Taurus and there’s a real sense of ‘enough is enough, we’ve reached a crisis point’, and we need to take conscious action to insist that governments, multinational corporations – and even individuals – stop abusing our planet.  Saturn in Pisces, which I’ve previously written about, adds to this desire to finally stop the willful poisoning of our planet.

At a personal level, this eclipsed Full Moon in Taurus brings into focus your ability to be sensuous and grounded and is an excellent time to indulge the senses and pamper the body. This Full Moon invites you to find a balance between the physical sensuality of Taurus and the emotional depth of Scorpio, great if everything is open in your relationship, but if there are underlying issues around jealousy or possessiveness, this Lunar eclipse could bring the situation to a head with some emotional drama playing out!

Check your birth chart to see which house is under the spotlight at 5 degrees Taurus as this is the area of life where matters may come to fruition or be revealed, intensified by the eclipse.  This eclipsed Full Moon is exact at 6.24am Queensland time (AEST) (the previous day in Europe & the Americas), so the best time for celebration and ceremony will be the previous evening while the energy is building.

Huge times!  As if the climate emergency wasn’t enough to contend with …

In this pressure-cooker lead-up to the eclipses, with Pluto stationary and Mars square Pluto, the situation in Gaza-Israel has erupted.  I wrote in last month’s newsletter that Pluto going stationary/direct is a time when deeply-buried issues may finally rise to the surface, and this is certainly happening on both sides of this 75-year-long tragic conflict and dispossession.

Long-buried issues are rearing their head in Australia too in the lead-up to the referendum. We go to the polls on the eve of the eclipse – a solar eclipse always brings the potential for a new start, and as a South Node eclipse it’s about releasing the old, whatever no longer works. I’ll admit I’m an eternal optimist, and I really hope we can redress – or begin to redress – the appalling injustices that have been inflicted on our indigenous peoples.

On a brighter note, make sure you check out Venus as a twinkling Morning Star before sunrise!!!  She is stunningly beautiful and worth getting up early to see!!!  (I know, some of you early birds are always up at that time!)

Take extra care in this eclipse season!

The Libra New Moon on Sun 15 Oct 2023 AEST (the previous day in Europe and the Americas) is an annular solar eclipse, intensifying the new beginnings that always come with a New Moon.

An annular solar eclipse has the force of a total solar eclipse, it’s just that the Moon, which is blocking out the Sun’s light, is further away from the Earth than usual, so it doesn’t completely cover the disc of the Sun.  Instead it allows a ring of light (“Ring of Fire”) to be visible around the eclipsed Sun (the word ‘annular’ comes from the Latin, meaning a ring).  In terms of its astrological effects though, it’s as strong as a total eclipse.  Lasting over five minutes, this eclipse will have a strong intensifying effect on this New Moon.  The Ring of Fire eclipse is visible across North, Central, and South America.
.

An eclipsed New Moon in Libra brings the opportunity to start a significant new cycle in your relationships and connections with others.

Libra is the sign of the born diplomat, the mediator who can always see both sides of any issue and wants the result to be harmonious. The symbol for Libra is after all the scales, where things can be weighed and balanced. This eclipsed New Moon in Libra is an excellent time to focus on restoring balance in your life, consolidating the theme of the Equinox last month, by implementing whatever changes are required to bring your life back into balance and harmony.

Libra is an Air sign, sociable and communicative, with a huge need for fairness.  It’s also one of the leadership signs, but its point of difference is that it doesn’t need to be out front – quite the contrary. The leadership style of Libra is inclusive and co-operative, making Libra an excellent leader.  The challenge however for Libra is decision-making!  They are so good at seeing all sides of the question that reaching a final decision can be agony for them, especially when they’re trying to keep everyone happy.  Because they hate disharmony, people-pleasing is often one of their main issues, not helped by their reluctance to confront and tackle any problems.  Embracing more of the assertiveness of their opposite sign Aries can be really helpful.

If your birthday is close to this Solar Eclipse New Moon, this marks the beginning of a highly significant new cycle in your life in terms of your identity and your sense of purpose.

If you have planets at 21 degrees of Libra, this marks the beginning of a very significant new cycle in whatever that planet symbolises (eg responsibility for Saturn).

Remember to set your New Moon intentions within 24 hours of this New Moon.  They’ll be especially powerful with the effect of the eclipse.  The eclipsed New Moon is exact at 3.55am Queensland time (AEST) at 21 degrees Libra.

Pluto goes direct 2023

pluto symbolPluto goes direct 2023

Pluto goes direct on Wed 11 Oct, having been pretty much stationary for the past month.

This is a time now when deeply-buried issues may finally rise to the surface, particularly if you’ve become more aware of them bubbling away in the last six months.  In fact they’re most likely to rise to the surface at this month’s Full Moon in Aries, see my previous post.

Plutonian issues usually concern disempowerment and powerlessness, where the issues run deep. Plutonian issues can also manifest as misuses or even abuses of power. This time is well-suited to inner work, shifting these deep-seated issues so that you can at last move forward. The key to moving through this is to become as aware as possible of your feelings and reactions, becoming conscious of how, on the one hand, we may give away our power, and on the other, how we may manipulate others to get our own way. It can operate at really subtle levels, so to paraphrase Socrates, know thyself – and stay in the light!

If you have chart points at 27-28 degrees of Capricorn (or any of the other cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra) or your birthday is around 18 Jan, you’ll be picking up on this intense transformational energy at a very personal level – in fact it’s been going on for the last year or two.  The good news is that it is finally easing for you as Pluto leaves this degree behind. Hopefully you have faced the demons and can now move forward from a place of empowerment.

Last SuperMoon of this year – Full Moon in Aries 2023

SuperMoonSuperMoon Full Moon in Aries

The last SuperMoon of this year

SuperMoon Full Moon in Aries   Fri 29 Sept 2023 at 7.57pm AEST at 6 Aries

Also heads up that with this Full Moon, we head into eclipse season, a time to be particularly careful. The eclipses start with next month’s New Moon solar eclipse. Pluto will be adding to the intensity by stationing direct just a few days before the eclipse.

The last of this year’s SuperMoonsthe Full Moon in Aries– falls on Fri 29 Sept. As always with a SuperMoon, the Full Moon is closer to Earth than usual and so appears larger and brighter in the night sky. The SuperMoon  has a much stronger-than-usual effect on us, heightening emotional dramas, overstretching emergency workers, and bringing higher tides and extreme weather events.

This Full Moon in Aries highlights our ability to be assertive and take action.  It requires us to be able to stand up for ourselves by being sufficiently assertive (Aries) while also being able to maintain harmony (Libra).  It calls for us to find a balance between our need for independence (Aries) and the need for co-operation with others (Libra).  The Full Moon is always about finding that balance between the opposing signs.

Full Moons often bring situations to a head, so be prepared for issues (whether at the personal or collective level) to reach some kind of crisis point where resolution becomes imperative. Any crisis happening now will of course be heightened by the SuperMoon.

The Full Moon is at 6 degrees Aries, so wherever this point falls in your chart is the area of your life that will be under the spotlight now.

The Full Moon is exact at 7.57pm Queensland time (AEST).

Expect feelings to run high more so than usual with a Full Moon, remember it’s a SuperMoon!

NOTE:  This Full Moon ushers in the eclipse season, the six-week period around the eclipses when we need to be extra careful.  The next New Moon, two weeks after this Full Moon, is a solar eclipse.  Stay conscious in this two-week period leading up to the solar eclipse, and of course for the following four weeks.  Take extra care – accidents are much more likely to happen around the time of eclipses.

Mercury goes direct Sept 2023

Screen Shot 2021-10-08 at 12.05.40 pmMercury goes direct Sept 2023

We can all heave a sigh of relief as Mercury goes direct after three weeks of its usual communication challenges, delays and frustrations.

Mercury goes direct on Sat 16 Sept, stationing at 8 Virgo after its recent retrograde period.

The frustrations of the last three weeks will now ease and communications become a lot smoother again.

In the days leading up to Mercury going direct, continue to double-check appointment times, that you have your keys with you, and that messages get through OK.

Remember that confusion and misunderstandings occur much more easily at this time.

Try to delay any major purchases or contract-signing till at least a week after Mercury’s gone direct.

Sept Lunar Phases & Moon Planting Guide ☘️🍃🎋

*

.

The New Moon in Virgo on Fri 15 Sept is likely to introduce changes to the way we approach our everyday life. This is an excellent time to start a new health regime, go on a diet or go on a cleanse.

The energy flow with a Virgo New Moon is to do anything that brings a new sense of order into your life. If you’re thinking of de-cluttering your house, this New Moon provides perfect timing, and may even demand it of you!!  You may feel it’s time to start a cleanse, detoxifying now that we’re into Spring in the southern hemisphere (Virgo loves purity!). If you’re feeling an unusually strong urge to spring-clean and tidy up the place, you won’t be alone. Virgo loves order more than anything, a place for everything and everything in its place.

Virgo is an Earth sign, cautious and practical, taking its time to create the order which it loves. It has a tendency towards perfectionism and is excellent at attention to detail.  The challenge for Virgo is not to get lost in the details and then lose sight of the overall vision, the classic state of “can’t see the wood (forest) for the trees”.  It’s great to be on top of the details, but remember to keep them in context.

If your birthday is close to this New Moon, this marks the beginning of a new cycle in your life in terms of your identity and your sense of purpose.

Remember to set your New Moon intentions within 24 hours of the New Moon. The New Moon is exact at 11.39am Queensland time (AEST) on Fri 15 Sept at 21 degrees Virgo.

Jupiter turns retro 2023

Jupiter canstockphotoJupiter turns retro 2023

Jupiter goes retrograde on Tues 5 Sept 2023 AEST (4 Sept in Europe and the Americas) at 15 Taurus.

Jupiter influences social, moral and ethical issues.  With Jupiter currently in Taurus it’s been very illuminating to see the recent successful lawsuit brought by young people in Montana USA against their government for failing to act sufficiently to protect them (and their futures) from the ravages of the climate emergency – a failure of duty of care and a breach of their constitutional and human rights.  https://www.ohchr.org/en/stories/2023/08/about-our-human-rights-us-youths-win-landmark-climate-case

Jupiter retro periods often bring changes in the law around matters associated with the sign Jupiter is in.  Here in Taurus, Jupiter is asking us to re-examine Taurean themes: how we treat Mother Earth, how we treat the environment, how we grow our food.  One example is the destructive practice of logging native forests, whether that’s in Tasmania or the Brazilian rainforest, which is not only a disaster ecologically but all adds to the climate emergency.   I recently came across a new term (new to me anyway) ‘necrocapitalism’ which I think sums it up perfectly, as our over-consumption leads us down the path to environmental disaster.

So in this Jupiter retro period, we can hope to see changes to laws regarding how we treat the environment.  More and more countries are recognising how destructive our current practices are, and making ecocide a recognised crime.  With Jupiter in its retrograde phase, existing laws can be re-examined and reassessed in the light of what is best for society, for us as a species.

Taurus is also associated with finance and wealth through its Venus rulership, and this Jupiter retro period could see a major reassessment of wealth distribution, laws around finance, tax havens, even cryptocurrency.

In broader terms, the Jupiter retro period is a time when reviews of injustice and other legal matters are more likely to take place.  I’m always hopeful that Jupiter retro may see a resolution to Julian Assange’s case.

At a personal level, Jupiter retro can bring a sense of restraint and apparent lack of progress – you might feel that hope and optimism are harder to come by.  Trust issues are likely to resurface, coming up for another opportunity for healing and transformation.  You may find yourself questioning your beliefs or dealing with issues of faith in the next four months.

Jupiter is retro until 31 Dec 2023 when it goes direct once more at 5 Taurus.
