Neptune goes direct 2023

Neptune goes direct on Wed 6 Dec allowing us to move forwards again after a five-month period of self-reflection in which we have revisited and maybe revised our dreams and visions for the future. We may also have revisited our spiritual longing, our urge to transcend our current reality.

Neptune can also symbolise veils of illusion, so we may have become more aware of how we manage to deceive ourselves, only seeing what we want to see or believing what we want to believe. The cosmic opportunity now is for our vision to be clearer and more connected with Spirit.

Neptune stations at 24 degrees Pisces before going direct again, so if you have this point strong in your birth chart, or if you’re born around 16 March, you’ll be feeling a strong urge to transcend reality and dissolve into a state of spiritual oneness – meditation and creative pursuits are a great way to channel this energy positively.

If however you’re trying to maintain a left-brain existence, you may well feel this as brain meltdown, with difficulty focusing and concentrating.

The negative expression of Neptune is the urge to escape, and it’s likely to be strong: at the most extreme end of its spectrum, Neptune entices us into addictive patterns, whether that’s drugs, alcohol or even Netflix. You’ll also be more sensitive than usual to toxins because of the Neptune influence, so be careful what choices you make!

It’s a great time to take a holiday, or even just take some time out, so you can honour Neptune and indulge your creative and spiritual pursuits.

Turbulence continues – Full Moon in Gemini 2023

The Full Moon in Gemini on Mon 27 Nov invites us to find a balance between logic and intuitive knowing, between the cold hard facts and what we believe to be true. This Full Moon invites us to integrate both polarities, yet also warns us against being too gullible.

This Full Moon is likely to continue the theme of turbulence associated with the New Moon, as the Sun is still close to Mars yet now moving away, suggesting the influence of Mars is waning.

Full Moons tend to bring situations to a head at the best of times so don’t be surprised if things get heated, and assertive action (hopefully not aggressive!) is needed. Keep an eye on the international news! Situations arising now could be volatile, and patience would be recommended, in fact that’s a good theme for this whole lunar month!

The Full Moon is exact on Mon 27 Nov 2023 at 7.16pm AEST (Queensland time) at 4 Gemini.

There is likely to be a strong collective desire for peace around the end of the month, as Venus in Libra passes over the Moon’s South Node on 30 Nov.

Expect the beginning of Sagittarius season to be uncharacteristically restrained!

The Sun goes into Sagittarius on 23 Nov (just after midnight here in SEQ) and then immediately squares Saturn, reining in the more reckless urges of Sagittarius and putting a dampener on Sag’s enthusiasm.

Mars is still close to the Sun, bringing an impatience to get moving, yet the square to Saturn is holding it back, a combination that feels like “driving with the brakes on” (!) Expect this period from 22-28 Nov to be rather frustrating!

Remember ‘Patience‘ is the keyword for this lunar month.

Although the eclipse season comes to an end at this New Moon, the presence of Mars & Uranus with the New Moon means that energies this month are still pretty volatile. Patience is a great key word for this lunar month!

The Scorpio New Moon falls on Mon 13 Nov 2023 at 7.27pm AEST at 20 Scorpio. This New Moon has a very volatile signature, close to Mars and opposite Uranus. Mars-Uranus is a combination often seen in the charts of accidents, and has explosive potential. More positively though, Mars-Uranus invites us to raise our level of consciousness around the actions we’re taking.

The New Moon in Scorpio typically represents the opportunity to begin a new cycle in self-empowerment. Scorpio is naturally concerned with issues of power, and the presence of Uranus with this New Moon suggests an invitation from the Universe to wake up to the uses, misuses and abuses of power – both in our personal lives and at the collective level.

Uranus often brings sudden and unexpected events. The addition of Mars to the mix suggests that action could be taken that is sudden, possibly shocking, but also with the potential to wake people up. There are any number of crises that this could apply to, whether it’s the war in Gaza, the war in Ukraine, or the climate emergency with the glaciers and sea ice-mass melting in Greenland & Antarctica. The higher expression of this New Moon-Mars-Uranus energy would see people finally awakening to the impact of these horrors and translating their awareness into some kind of action – Mars-Uranus is after all a very revolutionary energy.

The opposition between the New Moon in Scorpio and Uranus in Taurus suggests that one of the main underlying issues is the pursuit of materialism and corporate profits – the power of the multinationals – at the expense of the planet. In the context of the wars currently raging, oil is a major factor at play and we all know how powerful the oil lobby is – not to mention the arms industry! With Pluto reaching the end of Capricorn though, the old regime’s days are numbered and right now we’re dealing with their death throes – the new technologies will win through. Uranus’ placement with this New Moon could bring powerful revelations to light.

It’s likely that the few days either side of this New Moon will be a very disruptive time as Mars and Uranus face off and combine their energies with those of the New Moon.

Remember the sign of Scorpio is associated with rebirth, or more accurately with all stages in the three-fold journey of transformation: death, the passage through the underworld and then the rebirth, rising like the phoenix from the ashes of the old self. Scorpio represents the capacity for intense transformation and is the ultimate survivor.

If your birthday is close to this New Moon (within a day either side), this marks the beginning of a new cycle in your life in terms of your identity and your sense of purpose.

If you have a planet or chart point at 20 degrees Scorpio, this marks the beginning of a new cycle for you in whatever that planet symbolises (eg relationships for Venus).

Time to put your Saturn learnings into practice!

Saturn turns direct on Sat 4 Nov 2023 at zero degrees Pisces following its recent retrograde period.

If your birthday is close to 19 Feb or this degree is significant in your chart, you’ll probably have been feeling the heavy energy of Saturn sitting on this point for the previous couple of weeks, with a further two weeks to look forward to (!).

The energy of Saturn asks us to re-evaluate the area of life it is currently contacting, to take full responsibility for ourselves and our actions, and to cut away any dead wood – which ultimately stimulates new growth.

It is also very good at demanding that we do a reality check!

Hallowe’en or Beltane?

The cross-quarter days, the half-way points between the solstices and the equinoxes, are significant in the Celtic calendar. Traditionally they marked the beginning of the seasons, and were celebrated in a big way.

Because the seasons are reversed across North and South hemispheres, the festival you’ll be celebrating will depend on which hemisphere you live in.

Tues 31 Oct is a cross-quarter day. In the northern hemisphere it’s the festival of Samhain or Hallowe’en, the night before All Saints’ Day (ie All Hallows’ Eve), when the spirits of the dead are said to come round and the veils between the worlds are at their thinnest. This day falls half-way between the Autumn Equinox and Midwinter Solstice in the Northern hemisphere and so marks the beginning of Winter. Hallowe’en was traditionally celebrated by bonfires, turnip or pumpkin lanterns, and wearing costumes to disguise oneself from the spirits around. It marked the end of the harvest period as people went into the darkness of Winter.

In the Southern hemisphere, where the seasons are reversed, this is the Celtic festival of Beltane, a fertility festival celebrated with flowers in full bloom, which marks the beginning of Summer. Beltane was traditionally celebrated by dancing round the maypole, well-dressing, Morris dancers and other forms of fertility celebrations, including crowning a young woman the Queen of the May.

The Full Moon in Taurus on Sun 29 Oct is a partial lunar eclipse, amping up the energy of this Full Moon. Full Moons tend to bring situations to a head and a lunar eclipse really adds to the intensity of whatever’s happening. Be prepared for issues (whether at the personal or collective level) to reach some kind of crisis point where resolution becomes imperative.

At the collective level, the eclipsed Full Moon in Taurus asks that we bring our attention to Mother Earth. It’s the last eclipse in Taurus and there’s a real sense of ‘enough is enough, we’ve reached a crisis point’, and we need to take conscious action to insist that governments, multinational corporations – and even individuals – stop abusing our planet. Saturn in Pisces, which I’ve previously written about, adds to this desire to finally stop the willful poisoning of our planet.

At a personal level, this eclipsed Full Moon in Taurus brings into focus your ability to be sensuous and grounded and is an excellent time to indulge the senses and pamper the body. This Full Moon invites you to find a balance between the physical sensuality of Taurus and the emotional depth of Scorpio, great if everything is open in your relationship, but if there are underlying issues around jealousy or possessiveness, this Lunar eclipse could bring the situation to a head with some emotional drama playing out!

Check your birth chart to see which house is under the spotlight at 5 degrees Taurus as this is the area of life where matters may come to fruition or be revealed, intensified by the eclipse. This eclipsed Full Moon is exact at 6.24am Queensland time (AEST) (the previous day in Europe & the Americas), so the best time for celebration and ceremony will be the previous evening while the energy is building.

Huge times! As if the climate emergency wasn’t enough to contend with …

In this pressure-cooker lead-up to the eclipses, with Pluto stationary and Mars square Pluto, the situation in Gaza-Israel has erupted. I wrote in last month’s newsletter that Pluto going stationary/direct is a time when deeply-buried issues may finally rise to the surface, and this is certainly happening on both sides of this 75-year-long tragic conflict and dispossession.

Long-buried issues are rearing their head in Australia too in the lead-up to the referendum. We go to the polls on the eve of the eclipse – a solar eclipse always brings the potential for a new start, and as a South Node eclipse it’s about releasing the old, whatever no longer works. I’ll admit I’m an eternal optimist, and I really hope we can redress – or begin to redress – the appalling injustices that have been inflicted on our indigenous peoples.

On a brighter note, make sure you check out Venus as a twinkling Morning Star before sunrise!!! She is stunningly beautiful and worth getting up early to see!!! (I know, some of you early birds are always up at that time!)

Take extra care in this eclipse season!

The Libra New Moon on Sun 15 Oct 2023 AEST (the previous day in Europe and the Americas) is an annular solar eclipse, intensifying the new beginnings that always come with a New Moon.

An annular solar eclipse has the force of a total solar eclipse, it’s just that the Moon, which is blocking out the Sun’s light, is further away from the Earth than usual, so it doesn’t completely cover the disc of the Sun. Instead it allows a ring of light (“Ring of Fire”) to be visible around the eclipsed Sun (the word ‘annular’ comes from the Latin, meaning a ring). In terms of its astrological effects though, it’s as strong as a total eclipse. Lasting over five minutes, this eclipse will have a strong intensifying effect on this New Moon. The Ring of Fire eclipse is visible across North, Central, and South America.

An eclipsed New Moon in Libra brings the opportunity to start a significant new cycle in your relationships and connections with others.

Libra is the sign of the born diplomat, the mediator who can always see both sides of any issue and wants the result to be harmonious. The symbol for Libra is after all the scales, where things can be weighed and balanced. This eclipsed New Moon in Libra is an excellent time to focus on restoring balance in your life, consolidating the theme of the Equinox last month, by implementing whatever changes are required to bring your life back into balance and harmony.

Libra is an Air sign, sociable and communicative, with a huge need for fairness. It’s also one of the leadership signs, but its point of difference is that it doesn’t need to be out front – quite the contrary. The leadership style of Libra is inclusive and co-operative, making Libra an excellent leader. The challenge however for Libra is decision-making! They are so good at seeing all sides of the question that reaching a final decision can be agony for them, especially when they’re trying to keep everyone happy. Because they hate disharmony, people-pleasing is often one of their main issues, not helped by their reluctance to confront and tackle any problems. Embracing more of the assertiveness of their opposite sign Aries can be really helpful.

If your birthday is close to this Solar Eclipse New Moon, this marks the beginning of a highly significant new cycle in your life in terms of your identity and your sense of purpose.

If you have planets at 21 degrees of Libra, this marks the beginning of a very significant new cycle in whatever that planet symbolises (eg responsibility for Saturn).

Remember to set your New Moon intentions within 24 hours of this New Moon. They’ll be especially powerful with the effect of the eclipse. The eclipsed New Moon is exact at 3.55am Queensland time (AEST) at 21 degrees Libra.
