Maritime disasters – the heavens conspire?

TitanicMaritime disasters – the heavens conspire?

You can’t have missed the number of disasters at sea that have happened recently.  The word ‘dis-aster’ literally means bad-star, ill fortune, and there seems to have been plenty of that around in the past week or so.

First was the refugee boat that sank off the coast of Greece with hundreds of people on board, including women and children trapped below decks.  It’s not yet known how many have died, and it’s being described as one of the worst sea disasters in the Mediterranean.

Then there was the Titan submersible, on a tourist trip to the similarly ill-fated Titanic, an example of fate playing cruel tricks.

And most recently, refugee boats sinking near the Portuguese coast and the Canary Islands.

Astrologically, what’s going on?

Neptune, god of the seas and ruler of Pisces, the sign it currently occupies, is almost stationary.   It is about to go retrograde close to the fixed star Scheat which is associated with drowning, imprisonment, and extreme misfortune.  In both the Greek refugee tragedy and the Titan submersible, there are themes of imprisonment as well as drowning.

Scheat was strongly configured in the launch of the Titanic, so here’s one of the strange links of Fate that bound the Titan submersible and the “unsinkable” Titanic.

The Greek refugee disaster was on 14 June, the Titan lost contact on 18 June. The Sun, acting as a timing device, has been squaring that stationary Neptune on Scheat this past week, exact on 19 June, while Saturn, the grim reaper, also in Pisces, turned retro on 18 June, adding his voice to the theme of death by water.

Neptune will be around that degree of Scheat for the next few years, so maritime disasters are likely to feature heavily in the news cycles, especially with the huge migrant and refugee crises unfolding.  Be extra cautious if you’re planning a sea voyage!

Revisit your dreams & visions – Neptune goes retro 2023

NeptuneRevisit your dreams & visions – Neptune goes retrograde

Neptune slows to a standstill ready to turn retrograde on 1 July 2023 AEST at 27 degrees Pisces*, softening boundaries and looking for solutions that are all-inclusive, reminding us that we all belong to one humanity.

For the next five months, we have the opportunity to revisit the dreams and visions of the past seven months, and to integrate the inspirational and visionary energy of Neptune more fully into our lives.

At the other end of the Neptunian spectrum, we also have the opportunity to review the ways in which illusion, self-deception and escapism (possibly even addictive patterns of behaviour) play out in our lives, and to turn this around so we can connect more fully with the spiritual longing of Neptune.

Neptune is retrograde until 6 Dec 2023.

June Solstice 2023: Cancer ingress

winter solstice NewgrangeJune solstice: Cancer ingress

Turning point of the year

The June solstice is the Cancer ingress, literally when the Sun enters the zodiac sign of Cancer.

The word ‘solstice’ means ‘the Sun stands still’, as it reaches the furthest point north on its journey along the horizon.  If you’ve never tracked where the Sun rises each morning on the horizon, and noticed how that point changes with the seasons, getting progressively further north or south, then I really invite you to do so!  This is the origin of the ancient standing stones, finding these alignments and tracking them over the course of a year (and much more besides, like predicting eclipses, but that’s another story!).

The June solstice is the furthest north that the Sun rises, which is mid-summer in the northern hemisphere, and mid-winter in the southern hemisphere.

And guess what? On that day, the Sun is directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer – that’s how the Tropics got their name, because the solstice marks the moment the Sun moves into the tropical zodiac sign of Cancer (or Capricorn in Dec).

The June solstice is the longest day of summer (northern hemisphere), or the shortest day of winter (southern hemisphere), and after this, the days get shorter (northern hemisphere) or longer (southern hemisphere) as we move towards the September Equinox when day and night are equal once more.

The solstices are the real turning points of the year, and were always celebrated in ancient times, often with bonfires and dancing.  Plants especially respond to the change in the length of days, often only germinating either before or after the solstice.  If we were more in tune with Nature, especially without artificial light, we’d respond a lot more obviously too!

The solstice is exact on Thurs 22 June 2023 at 00.57am Queensland time (AEST) (the day before in Europe and the Americas).

Happy Solstice celebrations! 🌟🎄🌟🎄🌟

Venus enters her retro shadow 2023

Rose of VenusFrom 19 June onwards, Venus enters the shadow of her upcoming retro journey.

You’ll notice that Venus is becoming brighter and brighter in the evening sky as she comes closer to us on planet Earth.

She’s getting ready for her retrograde phase which starts on 23 July (and yes, that’s why she’ll stay so long in the sign of Leo – around ten weeks instead of the usual three).  In this time she’ll disappear from view and then re-emerge as the Morning Star, a mystery that intrigued ancient astrologers!

In this shadow retro phase, you may start to notice the beginnings of the influence of Venus retrograde – such as old lovers turning up in your life again … ❤️

It’s more noticeable once Venus is actually retrograde, but this shadow period is the lead-up and if you pay attention, you’ll often notice indications of what’s to come.

If you’d like to learn more about the amazing cycles of Venus, including which phase of the Venus cycle you were born under – are you an Evening Star or Morning Star Venus? – and what that means for you – come along to my next workshop Cycles of Venus.

The New Moon in Gemini on Sun 18 June 2023 brings the opportunity to begin a new cycle in the way we communicate, network and exchange ideas.

As an Air sign, Gemini is naturally objective and rational, so has a real talent for dealing with information.  Gemini has a combination of sociability and extreme curiosity – the answer to one question simply creates more questions!  Through its association with the media, this can be an excellent sign for journalism. Gemini is also associated with education, and the natural curiosity of this sign often makes learning effortless.  A New Moon in the sign of Gemini can usher in a new cycle in any of these areas.

The big question for this New Moon comes from Saturn stationing retro earlier that same day.  (see last month’s newsletter or check this link to read more). This is a great time to be asking How – and in what ways – do you limit yourself? It’s also a good time to review your boundaries, reassess your ability to say ‘No’ – and if necessary do a reset so that you can maintain healthy boundaries, especially in the light of the added Neptunian influence of this New Moon (see below).

Also, take stock of your responsibilities – are you carrying too heavy a load?  Or not enough??  Saturn urges us to Get Real about life – time to put some good structures in place to support the way you want to live your life.

This New Moon is closely square Neptune which presents a challenge around the many ways that we can deceive ourselves – even subtly.  Are you seeing things clearly or only seeing what you want to see?  Is something too good to be true?  Neptune can draw us into a fantasy – again the challenge is to inject a dose of Saturnian reality, and be careful your boundaries don’t dissolve away; they’re there to protect you.

If your birthday falls close to this New Moon, within a day either side, this marks a significant year ahead for you, especially in terms of your sense of self, your identity and your purpose in life.

The New Moon falls at 26 degrees Gemini.  If you have points in your birth chart close to this degree (within one degree), then a new cycle is likely to begin in that part of your life (eg relationships for Venus).

The New Moon is exact at 2.37pm Queensland time (AEST).  Remember to set your intentions in the 24 hrs immediately after the New Moon.

Millenials & Astrology

Millenials & Astrology

astro zodiac clock imageSome years ago I was interviewed by a young woman Bianca (sorry I can’t remember your last name Bianca!) on the topic of  Millenials & Astrology.  I recently came across this again and thought I’d share it with you as it’s really interesting from a generational perspective.

  1. Why do you think so many millennials are believing in and turning to astrology?

I think Astrology appeals to Millenials because they have an underlying spiritual yearning and they recognise the timeless wisdom of Astrology.

Astrology is a subject that has been around since Babylonian times, and Millennials are more open-minded and receptive to that ancient wisdom than previous generations have been, plus of course transmission of astrological ideas and insights is easier now with the internet and social media.

Astrology can give us insight into a generation as well as individuals, and the Millennials are a Uranus-Neptune generation, born into a time of tremendous socio-political changes (such as the fall of the Berlin wall, the dissolution of the USSR), which means from an astrological perspective that they are looking for spiritual answers (enlightenment – Neptune) through Uranian means, revolutionary or otherwise – and Astrology is a Uranian subject, it awakens people to their true potential.

I think this is at the core of the fascination that Astrology holds for Millenials.

  1. Do you think the rapid growth of technology has contributed to the increased interest of astrology?

Yes absolutely – see above:  “plus of course transmission of astrological ideas and insights is easier now with the internet and social media.”

  1. How do star signs influence the relationships that people form? And what would be your advice for someone who is struggling to find a compatibility in a relationship?

This is a huge question!!! People bring so much to relationships, their own needs, their relationship dynamics, their family “stuff”.

You can learn a lot about yourself and your partner through Astrology.  You can find out what your relationship strengths are, and what your challenges are likely to be, through a relationship reading.

I’d say your Moon sign is the single most important factor in any relationship when it comes to compatibility, as your Moon sign tells us what you need to be happy in a relationship – and believe me, that’s not the same for everyone at all, some people need security, some people need fun or a lot of freedom.  But even if your Moon signs are not harmonious, the knowledge and understanding that you’ll gain from Astrology of each other’s needs will help make your relationship much, much easier.

There are plenty of other factors at work too, like karmic contracts.  Astrology won’t tell you if this is THE relationship, that’s really up to the people concerned, but it can certainly give you lots of insight into your relationship dynamics.

For someone who’s struggling to find compatibility in a relationship, I’d say get your own chart done, so that you understand your own needs and relationship patterns, that’s a great starting point.  Then for sure, have a relationship reading so that you understand your partner better too – but it has to start with you.

  1. Would you advise millennials to closely follow what astrology suggests when forming romantic connections?

No, not at all, Astrology is not supposed to be used in that kind of deterministic way.  My advice – I’d say go where the energy takes you, where your intuition takes you, trust the connection that you form with a partner, and then use Astrology to get more in-depth understanding of the relationship that you’ve created.

Saturn goes retro on the New Moon

Saturn goes retro on the New Moon

Time to review how you’ve structured your life

Saturn

Saturn slows to a halt and turns retrograde at 7 Pisces on Sun 18 June 2023, just before the New Moon in Gemini.

Saturn retrograde encourages us to review the recent past and assess our ability to take full responsibility for our actions.  This is a good time to look at the ways we limit ourselves, and bring our fears to the conscious light of day.  This is also a good time to review our ability to say ’No’ and ensure that we can maintain healthy boundaries in all areas of our lives.  This Saturn retrograde period lasts until 4 Nov 2023.

If your birthday falls around 26 Feb, this is likely to be a time of increased responsibility for you, as you enter a new phase of maturity and step into a place of personal authority.  Your workload may increase at this time – if you accept this extra responsibility, this can be a time of success and achievement.  Saturn is a planet where we truly reap what we sow – if you’ve put in the hard work, this is very likely to be a time of achievement.  However, if you’ve cut corners along the way, this is a time when you’re likely to come unstuck and this can lead to feelings of failure.

If you have planets close to 7 Pisces (within a degree either side) you are being asked to take on a more mature approach to that part of your life, which will no doubt involve some re-evaluation.

For everyone – use the Saturn retro period productively to review the way you’ve structured your life. Make any necessary changes now, especially around boundaries and self-discipline.
